Employee Spotlight - Lise Kerckhove, Team Lead Data Analytics

OTA Insight’s workforce is formed of passionate and talented people from 36 different nationalities, ranging from data scientists to product managers – all driven by a set of values and a collaborative culture which come together to make the #BestTeamEver. The Employee Spotlight series aims to give you an insight into the careers of some of the remarkable individuals who make OTA Insight the industry leader for revenue and distribution enablement.

Lise Kerckhove is the Team Lead Data Analytics. She joined OTA Insight in January 2020 and is based in the Ghent office. Lise took some time out of her busy schedule to share with us a little bit about her role, her time at OTA Insight, and what makes her tick.

Can you tell us about your role at OTA Insight and how it's changed since you started?

I started at OTA Insight a little over two years ago as an Analytics Engineer with Rupert, who was at that point, my Team Lead. At the beginning of this year, Rupert moved to a Strategic Operations Manager role and I took over the Team Lead role. I am very grateful for this opportunity and am really excited to be the Team Lead of the Analytics Engineering team. Our main focus is basically problem solving, so we are in charge of building the data warehouse, cleaning the data, and making sure it is accurate and readable.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Everyday is different of course, but there are some elements that repeat themselves. I love coming to the office as it gives me so much energy - I usually get there quite early, at about 7:45am when it’s a bit quieter. It gives me a chance to kick-start the day with a cup of coffee, and I can check what messages have come in overnight.

I typically have lots of meetings with my awesome team, where we organise and plan. We also listen to the problems or issues that the business teams are facing and try to find solutions for them as our role also involves translating business requirements into technical requirements. There are five of us in the team and we need to build on our data warehouse to make our data durable and actionable, and this needs a lot of strategising and road-mapping.

How have you been able to learn and grow at OTA Insight?

I have been able to learn so much from my peers. We are surrounded by very intelligent people and there are a lot of growth opportunities within all the teams at OTA Insight. It’s a very open environment and everyone is always willing to help if you need it. They do so with such humility, too, and there is no one judging you if you ask a question. It’s the right culture to learn and develop in. Everyone is equally open to teaching you so that you can learn, do and grow. They also appreciate the effort you put in and reward you for it.

What has been your proudest moment at OTA Insight?

Oof! Tough one! I recently had a very proud moment when the team finished the migration of our Business Intelligence tool. There are still some things we are working on, but we worked intensely for the last 4 months on this product and were able to stay on track and deliver a result of which we can be proud of. What made me particularly proud is that we had to build everything from scratch, build the structure of the data modelling, make sure it was accurate and then migrate nearly 100 dashboards.

Which OTA Insight value do you associate with most and how do you see it put into action at the company?

I really cannot choose only one of OTA Insight's values! I would say humility, since this encourages us to listen and learn from each other and to help each other grow. And also the fact that we have a passion for great products. At OTA Insight we are very proud of all the products we are working on to make the lives of our customers easier. To be so proud about the company you are working for is not something to be taken for granted in the business world.

Once restrictions are fully lifted which destination do you wish to travel to first?

I would love to go back to Canada. I have been there over 6 times and every time it feels like home. It has such incredible nature, cool cities and nice people! A great wish of mine is to live there for a couple of months, maybe even years.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

Everyday is a new day - that gets me out of bed!

What’s your favourite activity in your spare time?

Volleyball. I’ve been doing it since I was 6 years old. It’s the perfect outlet for me.

What’s an app or piece of software you can't live without?

For work it would be our DBT (data building tool) but outside of work I like to be disconnected.

What book are you reading currently?

De Opgang, Stefan Hertmans - it’s a book about a house in Ghent that the author buys, before discovering its horrific history, and the previous owner's evil secrets.

Any wise words, or pearls of wisdom to share?

Don’t rush through life, great things take time, enjoy the journey.

Build relationships, get to know people, they are the ones you will remember.
